A Thousand Word Thursday

This week’s A Thousand Word Thursday is one of my absolute favorite pictures ever! These are Eli’s seven week old feet in my hand. And despite that it looks very professionally done, my friend Katie came over and did a photo shoot at our house so I could get some pictures of Eli without trying to drag the whole lot of boys out to get them done. We had taken bunches of bunches inside, outside on the porch, sleeping, awake, lots of outfits. And then John walked away for a moment to talk over the fence with our next door neighbor.

I had a moment of brilliance. I asked her if we could do this. You see, my husband and I are kind of unique. We have the exact same size hands. When we were dating he would talk about it all of the time. He has a thing with hands, as he fell out of a third story window when he was a year old and walked away. When his five year old sister, who saw him fall, was asked what she saw she said an angel caught him. And he had finger shaped bruises on his forehead, the only marks on him. When he put his hands up to mine and they matched perfectly, he says he knew. That’s why my button is all six of our hands together. Something very special to him, and subsequently us.

And his other obsession is baby feet. He has held all of children’s feet in his hands and admired them. He loves the newness of them. The fact that they have yet to hold the weight of the body and of the world on them. They are perfect examples of the fresh from God newness of this little human being. Knowing that this was our last little boy. Our last time holding such a wee little one. It brings a gravity to the cycle that is our life. And that this part is ending.

So on the warm early October day my friend Katie obliged. We threw a black cloth over my chest and arms holding my little newborn son. I held his itty bitty feet in my one hand. A beautiful gift for my husband. One he loves and will treasure forever, as will I. Perfect in every way.
