Nate The Great Update

We are now half way through the first quarter of Kindergarten.  I wanted to take a moment to let so many of you that have followed Nate’s journey for awhile now how he is doing.  But it has been tricky.  I didn’t want to write about everything too early in fear that I had prematurely jumped to conclusions.  So here we are.  Half way through the first quarter.  Long enough.

When we started him on medication this summer we immediately could see a huge difference.  But what works in the home environment does not necessarily transfer over to the classroom.  Therefore we took every step we could prior to the beginning of school.  We discussed the routine and what to expect.  I had an in depth conversation on the telephone prior to the start of school with his teacher.  And we all held our breath as he started the first day.
He got off the bus that day of school and I anxiously asked him about his first day.  He was excited and said it had gone well.  I checked his backpack and there was no note.  I was left to assume that all was okay.  That evening my cell phone rang.  My heart skipped a beat as I saw it was his teachers’ home number.  I answered.
He had done phenomenally well!  Better than any of us had expected.  Five weeks in he has continued to impress and amaze us all.  He has been using coping techniques that he learned in occupational therapy.  The medication is now routine.  And I can’t say enough about how wonderfully his teaching staff has done!
So there it is.  We have reached a place where Nathan is enjoying a normalcy that up until now his life has lacked.  As a result Daddy D and I have had our hearts soar with every silly song, butterfly migration lesson and carefully drawn pictures explained to us in elaborate stories.  We are relieved.  We are proud.
