My niece just turned two!  She is obsessed with owls, so my sister decided to indulge her love for the party.  Her theme was Twooo, Twooo (get it, like an owl saying “hooo, hooo).  I was charged, per usual, with creating a cake.

I checked out a bunch of cakes on Pinterest and smashed a bunch of ideas and inspirations together.  The one thing that my niece wanted when she looked through all of the cakes was the nest with an owl in it.  But it being her Twooo, Twooo I had to make her two little owls.

I created the owls by using ready to use Wilton Rolled Fondant, Chocolate. I made an oval shaped base.  Using the smallest circle cutter in
I made all of the “feathers”.  Add triangle ears and then free hand cut wings.  Using white fondant I tinted purple I added the bows.  The beaks are orange tinted white fondant.  The eyes are super easy!  Use two Wilton Rolled Fondant, Chocolate

I created the nest by rolling out the chocolate fondant and covering the outside of a small bowl upside down.  I let it dry overnight.  Then I just rolled small pieces of chocolate fondant and covered the dried bowl shape.  Easy nest!

The bottom tier of the cake I covered in purple tinted fondant.  I actually used Wilton Rolled Fondant, Pastel Blue and then tinted it with purple.  So much easier than going all of the way from white to purple!  I then wanted to create an ombre look, going from light purple to brown.  I started at the bottom using the lightest tinted purple.  Using the middle of the same Wilton Set of 3 Round Cut Outs I cut the circles.  For the first four rows I just added a touch more purple to the fondant to create a darker color.  On row five I mixed the darkest purple 50/50 with the chocolate fondant.  Row six is 25/75 purple/chocolate mix, and the final row is all chocolate fondant.

I love how it came out!  Add a rolled border using straight and the  bottom tier is done!

The top tier is covered in the white fondant.  I free hand cut out tree trunks and branch shapes and placed them on the cake.  Finally, I cut out leaves in different shades of purple using the leaf cutter from this Wilton Stepsaving Rose Bouquets Flower Cutter Set.

After placing the top tier on the bottom, I finished off the cake by rolling out a long strip of purple fondant which I fashioned into a large bow.

My niece loved it!  How cute is her tongue out?

My sister rocked the huge wall mural, don’t you think?

Her face in this picture makes all of the hard work worthwhile!

Check back tomorrow for how I made my favorite two year old her own owl wings! (Update:here is the wing tutorial!)
