Yesterday I showed you the owl cake I made for my niece’s birthday and I promised a tutorial on how I made her owl wings, so here it is!  I was inspired by this great costume at the Martin Family Times.  Being I make a great deal of costumes, I was able to take her semi-instructions and expand on them a bit.

First I measured Minnie’s (my niece) wingspan.  I measured from hand to hand outstretched.  On a piece of felt folded in half I cut half of that width.  Then I measured the distance between her shoulders and her bottom.  I marked that length on the fold and then drew an arch from that point to the top and cut it out.  Laid out it looked like this.

I then cut two lengths of ribbon to serve as the neck ties.  I also cut two pieces of elastic for wristlets.

I sewed them on.

Using four different colors of felt I cut a mountain of tear drop shaped feathers.  I just free hand drew a template on a cereal box and cut it out.  This made sure that all of the feathers were uniform in shape.

Starting at the bottom arch I started pinning the feathers with the round edges overlapping.  Be sure that you are pinning on the opposite side of where you sewed the wristlets and ties on.

By going past the edges of the base felt it makes it so that the base is not seen from the exterior.  Here is the entire row pinned.

Stich around the perimeter.  By stitching the feathers a third of the way down it allows for movement of the bottom feathers but assures that all of them are sufficiently secured.

Repeat the same process all of the way up the base.

I did make her a hat, but it was not her cup of tea.  It was a little on the small side, but she was not a big enough fan of it as to attempt a second one.  My advice would be to create the body of the hat longer than you think.

All of the embellishments were cut out of felt and just hot glued on.
