I spent the weekend working on my Valentine’s Day mantle. I can’t wait to share it with you at the end of this week! As with every season and holiday, I love to make a wreath. I am a bit obsessed with wreathes. I even have a whole Pinterest board devoted to them (are you following me over there yet?).
Living in a house full of guys, Valentine’s Day gives me the perfect excuse to overdose a bit on the one color lacking in my home- PINK! I also was looking to do a wreath with a lot of texture. Most of my other mantle mainstays are hard, clean lines. I wanted something to soften that look. Enter pom poms!
I made a ton of pink and teal small pom poms by hand. Why? Because my living room has an aqua color accent color I wanted to do a pink, red and aqua themed mantle. I searched the aisles of my big four- Joann’s, Michaels, AC Moore and Hobby Lobby, only to find no aqua/teal pom poms. The closest was a pale baby blue. Not going to work! So I made a bunch myself using a skein of yarn!
Using a medium sized styrofoam heart form I was ready to get started.
Just a bit of work with my hot glue gun and instant texture!
I started making it all pink, but it was starting to look like a mass of pink fluff that da boyz would not necessarily appreciate. By adding the teal stripe I think it breaks it up a bit and adds more interest! This wreath form was 9” tall. I marked lines at 3 and 6 inches to create the stripe.
I am in love with the fluffiness of it. Anyone else quoting Despicable Me?
It’s so fluffy I wanna die!!!!!
Hang it with a bit of pink satin ribbon and tie a bow. Finished!
This could absolutely be done with commercial pom poms. In my travels I found Hobby Lobby to have the largest selection, pom pom sizes and value bag sizes of pom poms.
Once you take the work out of making the pom poms yourself, it is super easy and rather quick to do!
