A family friend asked if I would make a birthday cake for her daughter’s first birthday.  I love coming up with a cake design and making something special for an important day.  So of course I said yes!

The napkin from the Minnie’s Bowtique Party décor was given to me.  I wanted to bring out some of the fun, pastel colors and details from the partyware into the design of the cake.

This was a first birthday party, and one of the most exciting parts of a first birthday party is the little one having cake.  I am a huge fan of smash cakes, so I decided to make Kylie a smash cake in the shape of the traditional mouse ears hat.

I used half of the Wilton Set of 3 Round Cut Outs to create the shape.  Then I did a crumb coat of buttercream and covered it in black fondant.  I cut four circles out of fondant and used two with a pop stick in between for each ear, then placed them into the cake.  I formed a pink bow and made the little girl’s name in pink fondant in a Disney type font, Kylie.

I also designed the cake so that the smash cake can be taken off and the tier cake remains in tact.  The top tier I covered in the classic Minnie Mouse dotted style.  All of the dots, circles and minnie mouse heads were created with the Wilton Set of 3 Round Cut Outs.

For this mom of four boys, I love whenever I get a chance to do girly and cute!
