Puppy Dog Cupcakes

Puppy Dog Cupcakes

A very merry unbirthday to Eli!  What?  You didn’t know Eli was celebrating an unbirthday?  Neither did I until the Pre-K snack calendar came home and I found out that if your child’s birthday is in August they schedule them for a day in June.  Yep…was totally unprepared for that.

So, Eli chose puppy dogs for his unbirthday cupcakes.  And he was very specific.  All different dogs, Momma.  While I did not accommodate him with 18 different puppy dog cupcakes, I did do six different “breeds” of sorts and made 3 of each.

All icing is done in buttercream.  No fondant at all was used on these K9s.  Instead I used jelly beans cut in half for eyes, m&m’s and jelly beans for noses, and laffy taffys and starbursts for tongues.  Finally, some of the ears are totsie rolls and caramels.  All it takes is a little warming and shaping and you are good to go!

This guys was created by using the Wilton #18 star tip and pulling out strips to create a furry look.

The poodle used a #13 Wilton Star tip to make mini swirls that make the details of this poodle.

This guy was iced smooth, then I created a snout using the Wilton #12 round tip in a large circle, and then a smaller one on top.  Taking chocolate icing and using the same tip I then piped a large circle before placing the jelly bean eyeballs in.  I finished off the icing details with a Wilton #5 round tip to create the freckles.

This wrinkly guy is made using the Wilton #12 Round tip to make the wrinkles around the carmel jowels.  Then using a #3 round tip I piped on the freckles.

This guy was my favorite!  First I used the #12 tip to pipe on a base of a snout and outline of ears.  Then using a Wilton #5 round tip I piped on all his fun hair!

  14. I absolutely love these cupcakes! The last one looks just like one of my dogs! I had a couple questions about this one. 1. Did you do a chocolate buttercream or did you use food coloring? 2. How did you do the snout and ears? Thanks so much these are adorable!

    • The last one being the fuzzy dog, or the pug type dog? For both, I used only vanilla buttercream colored with Wilton Gel coloring. For the fuzzy dog, the snout is just a mound of buttercream then added “fuzz” on top, topped with a jelly bean. The other dog is a caramel warmed, rolled out and then cut into that shape and an m&m for the snout. The ears are also warmed and shaped carmels.
