Kool Aid Tie Dye

This summer has been HOT HOT HOT as of late!  And what’s a family of six home all summer to do?  Find fun, affordable activities to do together.  I decided to venture into the land of tie dying with my guys, and I headed to Walmart for supplies.

I had read up on tie dying with Kool Aid, so I headed to that aisle of my local Walmart.  I love all of the flavors, and subsequently colors, of Kool Aid you can use.  And you can’t beat the 20 cents a package price tag!

Be sure to pick up the unsweetened packages.  You want the colors, not the sugar!

I picked up the rest of my supplies at Walmart, the cotton t-shirts to dye, and vinegar to aid with the bonding of the Kool Aid to the fabric.  I checked out using the express lane and we were on our way!  Be sure to check out more of our shop and experience here.

After I checked out I scanned my receipt into the Shoparoo app.

This app is easy to use and helps you earn points to donate to your school with your every day grocery purchases!  Also, right now $6 in Kool Aid purchases gets you a discounted 4 pack to see Big Time Rush with your family.  Great deal!

We headed home and set to work!  First we tied our shirts up using rubber bands.  Than we made sure they were wet all of the way through.  Then we made batches of dye.  Using a pot on the stove we mixed one packed of Kool Aid with two capfuls of the vinegar.  Then we brought the mixture to a boil.  I then transferred the hot liquid into empty and cleaned out mustard containers to ease in the squirting/coloring process.

We used chinese food containers (any lidded plastic container will do) and then the kids dyed their shirts according to their fancy.

Then I placed the lid on the container.  Using plastic wrap I covered the container all of the way around.  Then I placed it in the microwave on high for 3 minutes.  Kool Aid Tie Dye

After it had cooled for a bit, I then undid the rubber bands and let the shirts dry on the line.  We loved how they came out!  Each boy had their own unique pattern and color choices.

In the end I used 30 packages of Kool Aid for all four shirts.  That is only about $6 in Kool Aid drink mixes!  Coincidentally that is exactly how much you need to spend on Kool Aid products to scan into the Shoparoo app and get the Big Time Rush/Kool Aid ticket deal!

After the shirts had dried, we decided to add the Kool Aid man face to it, because how else should you decorate a Kool Aid Tie Dyed shirt, right?  I used the freezer paper method.  This means I used a piece of freezer paper and traced the design I wanted to make onto it.  Then using an exacto knife I cut out the design.  Finally I ironed the design onto the front of the shirt.

I used fabric paint and a sponge pouncer to then fill in the design on the shirt.  While it is still wet I removed the stencil and let it dry fully.

Here are our shirts all dry and ready to wear!
