Eli’s Despicable Me Evil Minion Cake
Eli’s birthday and party was on Sunday, and somehow my baby turned five! As our only summer birthday in the D family we enjoyed a laid back backyard BBQ with some family and friends. But no party is complete without a cake.
There were about fifteen idea changes on Eli’s part before he finally landed on his favorite idea for a cake. An evil purple minion from Despicable Me 2. Now, evil minions come in many a shape and size and a large variety of looks. Like one eye or two, crazy teeth and hair.
For reference sake, this is the evil minion that most spoke to Eli, and that I modeled the cake after. But of course, he wanted just one eye.
I set to work creating a minion out of cake. I loved this tutorial from Sugar Sweet Cake Company. For my cake, I used two 6 inch cakes made with the Wilton 3 inch pan, one 6 inch cake made with a Wilton 2 inch pan, and topped with a dome made with half of the Wilton Sports Ball Pan Set.
After crumb coating the entire stack of cakes I covered it in fondant. The White Fondant white fondant was tinted with Wilton Violet Icing Color. white fondant was tinted with Wilton Violet Icing Color.
Next I created the overalls using the pre tinted Wilton Ready-to-Use True Black Fondant. I LOVE that this is now available already done. I hated trying to make a true black on my own.
The biggest part of this cake was the hair. I did it by pushing the purple fondant through a Garlic Press. A bit tedious, yes, but it created uniform pieces that I just kept building up.
The goggle was made using fondant and then painting it with Wilton Silver Pearl Dust
mixed with lemon extract. I love the metallic feel!
Here is my birthday boy smiling while everyone sang, which of course makes the time spent on the cake way worth it.
Happiest of birthdays to my Eli Noel!
